My friend has depression and I am constantly worried, she keeps saying that she will self-harm and this has really affected my mental health.
Hi there, Lauren here!
I've been in exactly the same situation. Last year, I had a friend that was suicidal and self-harmed on a regular basis. They would tell me when they'd just cut, but I didn't know what to say or do to stop them. Obviously, the last thing I wanted them to do was hurt themselves, because they're my friend and I love them. This began to affect me too, as whenever they spoke about their self-harm, it was very triggering. My advice to you is to let your friend know you're there for them, but to take a step back. Let them know you're starting to feel low as well, so you need a bit of space, and if they're a true friend they'll understand. Of course, you don't want to feel like you're abandoning them, but your mental health comes first, always. Time is a healer, and hopefully you and your friend feel better very soon
