There are some tried and tested ways to help you nod off every single night. I used to be like you as well, I had many a sleepless night. I still don't sleep soundly, I wake up most hours of the night- I never sleep through, which means I get much less sleep than I should. But it's an improvement from zero sleep! The first step is to figure out what's stopping you getting those ZZZ's.
Is it that you're too hot? Too cold? Or maybe you need to wear some socks to bed? (Seriously, it worked for me). The key for me was a sound routine, and the one I used before, I still use to this day. I have a nice shower, not too hot, not too cold, and then I go into my room and turn off the big light, and instead put on a small lamp.
The less light will help your brain switch off. I then chill, I read a book listen to some music, or have a cup of tea. Something calming and relaxing, and then I slip under the covers (with my socks on of course) and for me I have to lie on my right, then switch to my left to go to sleep. No idea why!
But I can't fall asleep otherwise, so try some other sleeping positions. Trying to get to sleep is very much about not trying. The more you try, the less likely you are to fall asleep, so if it's not happening, don't force it, get up and read a book, or stick some ear buds in. You could even try a warm glass of milk (ew) whatever works for you- you just need to find out what that is, and it's very much trial and error!
